Charming, excitable and polite.

These are the three words that best describe boyband JLS on meeting them for the first time.

All four make a point of introducing themselves — Aston, JB, Oritse and Marvin — and are full of compliments.

Within minutes there is a huge burst of laughter and I am called upon to judge Aston’s impression of a seal… which he is performing with full gusto on the floor.

During the time it takes to set up for the interview, the boys — who came second in last year’s X Factor competition — begin a play fight.

It all starts to get a bit out of hand, but no one else in the room seems to mind.

Quiet now. I want some decorum.

JB: Sorry. Right we’re ready.

Good, right lets go back to the Mobos in October — bet it was great beating X Factor winner Alexandra Burke and scooping two awards?

JB: It wasn’t about beating Alex at all, she was sat on a table next to us and she was one of the first people to congratulate us on winning the award.

We had a great time and we’re so over the moon to have won both awards that we were nominated for.

What would you rather have done — won the X Factor or your two Mobos?

Aston: What we’re doing now.

Marvin: With hindsight now, we’re glad we didn’t win the X Factor because we wouldn’t be in this position. We’ve had an amazing start, Alex is a deserved winner, she’s a fantastic artist and we’ve now won two Mobos.

It’s not always about winning, it’s not always about beating someone, it’s about us establishing ourselves in the market place and having a career in music.

Are you feeling the pressure now you have won two awards so early in your career?

Oritse: Winning awards just makes us the more determined to go out and do even better.

The pressure that we have we feel amongst each other, and that’s in terms of goals and aims that we always want to try to achieve. We have our own delivered pressure.

I think that’s really important because it means that you care about your job and what you do. We love to do this and we want to be doing this for a very long time and it’s all about JLS and establishing ourselves.

Not all former X Factor contestants have stood the test of time. Steve Brookstein, Shayne Ward, Same Difference and Leon Jackson — where are they now? What is the secret to success?

Aston: There is no secret to success, it’s just what direction you go in. We’re a group, we’re a totally different act to what they were.

At that time there may have been another 10 solo artists out at the time, that’s just how this industry works, now we’re the only boy band. Right now, there’s a market gap and we’re tying to grab hold of it.

Do you think the X Factor format is getting rather boring as we have seen the sob stories all before?

Aston: I bet you sit there and you watch it and you think about it. You might say: ‘There’s another sob story’ but you will still sit there and watch it, because you’ll be thinking that that is actually someone’s life. That’s what they’re going through.

JB: I sat and watched it last weekend and I thought to myself: ‘You know what this is actually a really great show.’ I’m not talking from being on it, I’m talking from the way it’s filmed, the way it’s done. And you can’t deny that every week it has millions of viewers, you don’t get that by chance.

Oritse: You get very attached to people. I almost don’t believe in the term ‘sob story’, because for me, it’s one of the biggest reasons why the show is so relatable to the general public.

Nobody wants to see fully auditioned artists going onto that show being well groomed and well prepared.

What you want to see are real people, they could be your next door neighbour, it could be your mum, it could be your uncle, whoever has this big dream to play on a major stage, to get the opportunity they would never have had without the show.

Marvin: I must admit I got a little bit choked up. You can’t but help getting a little bit attached, it’s real life, they’re real people and they’re just trying to pursue what we were trying to pursue.

Alexandra Burke and Cheryl Cole both have singles out — which record will you be buying, and you HAVE to give an answer.
Aston: We’re half and half.

Marvin: We have nothing but love for both of the ladies.

JB: Two of us would buy Cheryl’s single and the other two would buy Alex’s.

What is all this we have been hearing about you wanting to make it big in the US?

Oritse: We’ve not actually discussed anything to do with the US yet. For us the most important thing is for us to do well on our home turf.

At the end of the day we were part of a show where everybody voted for us and I think our fans and supporters deserve for us to be here and give them some great music before we even branch off anywhere around the world. But obviously, it will be in our sights in the future. Right now it’s all about the UK.

One final question, what is on your rider list?

Marvin: Our rider list is very simple, all we request is fruit, water, towels, Haribo and Nandos.

Aston: To be fair we don’t even ask for Nandos, we go to Nandos and bring it back ourselves.

The band’s second single Everybody In Love is due out on 2 November 2009 and their debut album will follow on 9 November.

JLS were spotted celebrating their double Mobo win at the launch of a new club in London.

The X Factor runners-up, who received gongs for Best Newcomer and Best Song for Beat Again at the Mobo Awards in Glasgow on September 30, ordered bottles of Dom Perignon champagne and Grey Goose vodka — totting up a bar bill of over £2,000 — at The White Room, at On Anon in Piccadilly.

A source at the club observed Aston Merrygold, Marvin Humes, Jonathan ‘JB’ Gill, and Oritse Williams arriving at the hotspot around 10pm, where they were seen chatting and dancing with a group of girls, as they quaffed six bottles of bubbly — in under two hours.

Dragons’ Den star Duncan Bannatyne has said he thinks X Factor runners-up JLS are set to make a fortune in the coming months. The Scottish entrepreneur is founder of Bannatyne Health Clubs and appears on the Sunday Times Rich List.

The businessman met the boyband at the Mobo Awards at the SECC in Glasgow.

He told the Daily Star: “I love the boys. I think having them up here in Scotland with the rest of the MOBO acts is great.”

He added: “JLS will be worth more than me soon.”

JLS band member Aston Merrygold said that meeting the famous Scot was a good way to impress his mother.

Aston said: “She’s always worrying about what she reads about us partying in the papers so now she can finally get something positive by seeing me with him.”

The band came away with two awards from the MOBOs, one for Best Song and the other for Best Newcomer.

Another band to win two awards were rappers N-Dubz who hit out at JLS for being a “manufactured” band.

Band member Dappy said that N-Dubz are more credible because they had to work their way up from the bottom.

He told The Sun: “I spent years writing lyrics in my bedroom with no-one hearing.

“Now people are singing them back to me. JLS don’t know what that’s like.

“I’ve got nothing against them, they’ve done well for themselves. But I just think it’s different to us, who have worked our b*****ks off.

“At the end of the day, they’re a manufactured band. They just sing other people’s songs. And they were miming.”

X Factor runners-up JLS won two Mobos at the awards on Wednesday night but Aston Merrygold had his sights set on Alexandra Burke at the after party. The boys won prizes for Best Song and Best Newcomers.

Aston told The Sun: “Winning tonight was the best thing. So now I need a lady by my side to complete it.

“Alex fits the bill, she is hot tonight. Why not?”

The 21-year-old made his move at the after party as they were dirty dancing to Michael Jackson’s ‘Wanna Be Starting Something’.

Discussing her chart battle with mentor Cheryl Cole, Alexandra told the newspaper: “Maybe we could have a dance-off.

“I’ll have to learn some new moves from Aston though. He’s on fire tonight.”

Fellow Mobo winners N-Dubz have blasted JLS by accusing them of miming to their tracks.

The rappers criticised the boyband before their Mobo rehearsals backstage.

The said: “No miming, guys. This is the real deal.”

However, the trio were unaware that their comments were heard over the tannoy in the Glasgow SECC by 200 people.

An insider said: “JLS were incandescent.”

JLS have responded to comments made by N-Dubz star Dappy Contostavlos.

Contostavlos recently criticised the group for being “manufactured” and claimed that they mimed at the MOBO Awards.

However, BBC News reports that the band has refused to criticise the rapper.

Member Oritse Williams insisted that JLS and N-Dubz “respect” each other and described Contostavlos as a “talented guy”.

He added that the groups had spent time together before and after the MOBOs.

Meanwhile, Aston Merrygold said: “You’ve got to think whether that was said in the context it was written. We’ve learnt this from the stories that have been written in the past.

“You can say stuff — as a joke or in any way — but it doesn’t matter because on paper, people will write it down how they want to write it down.

“We don’t listen to any of that nonsense anymore.”

N-Dubz and JLS both won two awards at the MOBOs on Wednesday night.

N-Dubz star Dappy has criticised JLS for being a “manufactured” band, claiming that they had an easy rise to fame on The X Factor.

The 21-year-old rapper insisted that N-Dubz are more credible because they had to work their way up from the bottom.

“I spent years writing lyrics in my bedroom with no-one hearing. Now people are singing them back to me. JLS don’t know what that’s like,” he told The Sun.

“At the end of the day, they’re a manufactured band. They just sing other people’s songs. And they were miming.”

Both JLS and N-Dubz scooped two awards each at the MOBO Awards earlier this week.

It has since been reported that that the two groups fell out after Dappy criticised JLS for miming during their performance at the ceremony in Glasgow.

SUCCESS: JLS performing on stage at the MOBO awards.

THE family of chart-topping former Peterborough schoolboy Aston Merrygold have spoken of their delight following the star’s success at Wednesday night’s MOBO awards.

Aston’s popular four-piece act JLS scooped the awards for Best Song and Best Newcomer at the glitzy ceremony in Glasgow just 12 months after first hitting television sets across the nation.

This time last year, Aston (21) and the group were starting their journey on X Factor – but this week’s awards have shown just how far the act has come since finishing runner up to Alexandra Burke.

Today, the singer’s 16-year-old brother, Conor, explained how he, mother Siobhan, father Oz and sister Courtney gathered at their West Town home to watch them in action.

“We thought they would maybe get Best Newcomer, but to get the Best Song award was amazing. I was nervous about it, but we were just happy to see them there and enjoy watching them.

“When we were watching and the cameras showed all the people, you could hear them screaming for them,” he said.

JLS’ second single, Everybody In Love, from their eagerly awaited debut album, is due to be released on November 2.

Alexandra Burke had a real Aston thriller at the afterparty.

Jls star Aston may have scooped two Mobos, but he had his heart set on X Factor winner Alex.

Surrounded by women, he told us: “Winning tonight was the best thing. So now I need a lady by my side to complete it.

“Alex fits the bill, she is hot tonight. Why not?” Why not indeed. And he brought the Nissan Mobo afterparty to a standstill as he finally made his move.

They were dirty dancing to Wacko’s Wanna Be Starting Something as he leaned in and said: “You drive me wild.”

La Toya Jackson, who got a standing ovation for her tribute to Michael Jackson earlier, high-fived us and winked: “My brother’s music makes people fall in love.”

Later we prised Alex away for a few minutes to talk about her upcoming chart battle with mentor Cheryl Cole.

She joked: “Maybe we could have a dance-off. I’ll have to learn some new moves from Aston though. He’s on fire tonight.”

JLS partied with Dragon’s Den millionaire Duncan Bannatyne after their double MOBOs win.

The straight-talking chap, 60, made a surprise beeline for the quartet at the lavish Nissan after-show party.

Duncan said: “I love the boys. I think having them up here in Scotland with the rest of the MOBO acts is great.”

Aston Merrygold, 21, was particularly pleased to meet Dunc on behalf of his mum.

He joked: “My mum has a business idea that needs the Dragon’s investment. She’s always worrying about what she reads about us partying in the papers so now she can finally get something positive by seeing me with him”

Duncan reckons: “They don’t need my help. JLS will be worth more than me soon.”

JLS celebrate their Mobo success with champagne

Which cheeky band member was caught topless at after-party?

MOBO winners JLS partied so hard after scooping two gongs at last night’s awards that one naughty member was found half naked at the after-party.

Step forward cheeky Oritse Williams, 23.

He exclusively told Now Online: ‘We partied all night. I was so hot and dripping with sweat, I had to strip off in the toilet and dry my shirt with the hand dryer.’

Sadly the sexy group’s hoard of female admirers didn’t get a peek of Oritse’s pecs, but he says: ‘I definitely raised a few eyebrows from the guys coming into the bathroom.’

With just three hours sleep, Oritse and the rest of the boys — Aston Merrygold, 21, Jonathan ‘JB’ Gill, 23, and Marvin Hume, 24 — headed home from Glasgow to continue the partying after winning Best Newcomer and Best Song for their No 1 hit Beat Again.

‘We can’t wait to celebrate with our friends and family,’ says Oritse. ‘We never imagined we’d be attending the MOBOs, much less winning two awards.

‘We’re truly stunned. It’s definitely been one of our highlights this year.’
